DCCA Child Care Program for new Saipan applicants
(DCCA) — The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs will be doing a pre-eligibility assessment for new applicants for the Child Care and Development Fund, or Child Care Program, for Saipan.
The pre-eligibility assessments will be done beginning Monday, Dec. 21, to Wednesday, Dec. 30.
Pre-eligibility assessments will be done at the Child Care and Development Fund Office on Capital Hill Building No. 1347 between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The first 100 applicants who qualify during the pre-eligibility assessment will be given an application to complete. When the 100 applications are out, the program will immediately close its issuance of applications.
Parents and/or guardians who are interested in applying for the program must go through the pre-eligibility assessment and will need to bring the following:
Three latest check stubs showing the applicant’s name, hours worked (at least 60 hours bi-weekly), hourly rate, and gross earnings (both parents)
Most recent 1040 tax (both parents)
School documents (class schedule, must be full time 12 credits)
Training schedule (must have at least 60 training hours bi-weekly)
Completed applications along with the required documents should be forwarded to the Child Care Program Office, Capital Hill no later than Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 at 4 p.m. Incomplete applications as well as applications turned in after this time and date will not be accepted.

For this program opening approved applications will be funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is valid only until Sept. 30, 2010.
Requirements:
Applicant of Household
• Check stubs for the most recent three pay periods for each parent or guardian
Must show at least 60 work hours bi-weekly
• A copy of Identification Card for each parent or guardian (Passport, CNMI driver’s license, Mayor’s ID Card or entry permit)
• A copy of your most recent 1040 Tax (each parent or guardian)
• Residency: The applicant or guardian must be living in the CNMI
Provide one of the following documents
• House Rental/ Mortgage
• Utility Receipt
• Telephone Receipt
• Entry Permit
• Employment verification for each parent or guardian
• Child support statement/stub (if applicable)
• Training/Education Verification and class schedules
If in training, must show at least 60 training hours bi-weekly
If in education, must be enrolled in at least 12 credit units
If single parent/guardian in a household provide notarized affidavit
Child/Children Household member:
• A copy of Birth Certificate for each child (Child must be a U.S. citizen or a qualified alien, as defined in Personal Responsibility Work Opportunity Act
• A copy of U.S. Passport
• A copy of Social Security Card
Horizon announces Guam/NMI general rate increase
(Horizon Lines) — Horizon Lines has filed a general rate increase in the Guam/CNMI tariff (HRZL-353) that will become effective on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010.
This rate increase covers increasing costs in a number of areas, including gate, yard and terminal operations on the West Coast and in Guam.
Westbound cargo per container rates for shipments originating on the Mainland moving to Guam or the CNMI will increase by $120.
The U.S. West Coast terminal handling charge will increase by $125 per container on shipments to Guam or the CNMI.
Eastbound cargo per container rates for shipments originating on Guam or the CNMI will increase by $120.
The U.S. West Coast terminal handling charge will increase by $125 per container for shipments from Guam or the CNMI.
Horizon Lines is continuing to make healthy investments in its Guam operation and infrastructure to accommodate the anticipated military build-up and its accompanying growth in container volume.
In the past three years, Horizon Lines has deployed five new state of the art vessels in the Guam tradelane.
These new assets are delivering earlier arrival times, increased refrigerated cargo and flatrack capacities, and greatly improved reliability.
Green Meadow PTA meeting
(GMS) — Green Meadow School will have a PTA meeting on Dec. 14, Monday, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on the Chalan Kiya campus.
SSHS mid-progress report
(SSHS) — Saipan Southern High School students’ mid-progress report is scheduled to be picked up on Friday, Dec. 18, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Teachers will be available in their classrooms for parents/legal guardian visit.
All students will be released at 1 p.m.
US Virgin Islands gets $900K grant
WASHINGTON, D.C (U.S. Department of the Interior) — Interior’s Insular Assistant Secretary Tony Babauta signed a $900,000 grant to repair the Mon Bijou Collection System on St. Croix, the U.S. Virgin islands.
The project will replace 3,000 linear feet of concrete and ductile pipe which will help prevent flooding and reduce public health risks for residents served by the Mon Bijou System.
DUI/sobriety checkpoints
(DPS) — The Department of Public Safety’s traffic section will be conducting DUI/sobriety checkpoints on Dec. 13, Sunday.
The first setup will be Beach Road Chalan Laulau by the B/R Auto Shop Intersection. This operation will start at 9:30 p.m. and end at 10:45 p.m.
The second setup will be on Middle Road 2W Chalan Laulau by Trans-America. This operation will start at 11:45 p.m. and end at 1 a.m.
This activity is part of the Department of Public Safety’s efforts to deter and detect impaired drivers and ensure that all vehicle occupants and motorist are protected.
In addition, traffic officers will be conducting highway criminal interdictions, saturation patrol, aggressive driver interdiction and laser activities.

Red flag raised at 10 Saipan sites
(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality says water samples collected from Tanapag Meeting Hall, Central Repair Shop, DPW Channel Bridge, American Memorial Park, Micro Beach, Dai-Ichi Drainage, Garapan Fishing Dock, Comm. School Beach, Chalan Piao Beach and Hopwood School Beach contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria — enterococci — that exceeded the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.
DEQ has given these locations a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
