KOROR (Palau Horizon) - Effective July 1, the Palau Public Utilities Corp. will implement a 3.9-cent increase in its power rates.
PPUC said the increase is due to its fuel and engine conditions.
For residential areas, the rate will increase from 15.3 cents to 19.2 cents.
Residential costumers consuming 501 to 2,000 kilowatt hours, who now pay 23.3 cents, will be charged 27.2 cents, while residential costumers consuming more than 2001 kwh will pay the new rate of 31.7 cents. Their current rate is 27.8 cents.
PPUC said the maintenance services for the engines at the Malakal and Aimeliik power plants are ongoing to minimize power outages.
The present total capability of the power plants is 13,200 kw with the system peak load for daytime at 11,567 kw and 11,217 kw at nighttime.
The average load from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. is 11,133 kw; from 4 p.m. to midnight, 10,045 kw; and from midnight to 8 a.m., 7,872 kw
PPUC will mark its 15th anniversary on July 6 with a series of activities such as a walkathon organized by the Palau National Olympic Committee and the Palau Women and Sports Commission.
The public is invited to attend the walkathon, which will be held on July 4 and require a $2 registration fee.
The fees collected will be donated to the 2009 Belau Games.
On July 2, PPUC will host a radio talk show to encourage and educate the public on energy conservation.
Energy conservation brochures will be given away from July 1 to 7.
PPUC will also recognize its employees who have worked with the corporation since its creation.
Of PPUC’s over 100 employees, approximately 30 have been with the corporation since its establishment on July 6, 1994.
