KOROR (Palau Horizon) – Labor Chief Russel Masayos was detained for 24 hours last week for suspected criminal offenses.

Masayos was picked up by an investigator from the Special Prosecutor Office and was locked up in jail Thursday night.

Masayos was released from custody Friday afternoon.

Masayos could not be reached for comment. Horizon tried to call him at his cell phone but to no avail.

Special Prosecutor Michael Copeland was off-island and is expected to be back on Wednesday. He left the island Friday.

However a source who asked for anonymity said that Masayos was locked up in jail for Misconduct in Public Office, bribery, conspiracy, violation of code of ethics and human trafficking.

Horizon gathered that Masayos had been long under investigation for these criminal activities.

Masayos is currently the Chief of Labor Division. He started serving as Chief of the Division during the time of President Tommy Remengesau.
